Dressember 2017

This is my fourth December in a row where I have donned a dress for 31 days to raise awareness and money for those trapped in slavery.

To be honest, this year has been the most difficult for me. The dresses are not the tough part. I like to dress up and I find it easier to decide what to wear every morning because I have fewer options. The problem is that half of December has past and I have not been questioned as to why I am wearing a dress…again. That is how I thought I would be able to share with people my heart for justice, and how Jesus has been changing me over the past few years.

But even this morning as I focused my attention to Jesus while doing devotions, I felt my heart change. It came to mind all the times that I have been able to share this and how I have seen God at work.

– Last year, Julie and I were able to share with the CnC and Roaders through Bible Studies the different ways people are being enslaved and what the Bible says about loving people and justice.

– The first year we did Dressember, there were 7 participants on our team. It has grown to about 15 participants this year and last year.

– King Road has been gracious in supporting us and giving us opportunities to share in church, write news posts, and have fundraisers at the church.

-This year, a few of us had the privilege of sharing with some King Road members and members of the community through a movie night, our passion for freedom for those in slavery! This movie night helped us raise $1,459 dollars for International Justice Mission!

Bethany Hoang, advisor for IJM’s Institute for Biblical Justice, wrote, “Seeking justice doesn’t begin at the door of a brothel. Seeking justice begins with seeking the God of justice.” Being involved in Dressember has led me to seek God more intentionally and to rely on him in ways I have never before. Seeking the God of justice has not always been easy for me.

My life has been disrupted in different ways, such as being convicted to change my buying habits to fair trade and other ethical options that are sometimes more expensive. Also, it has forced me out of my comfort zone and led me to share what I am passionate about with others, which makes me feel very vulnerable. As I look ahead, I am excited to see where seeking the God of justice will bring me.
